Kundalini Yoga The Secret Practice

In 2015 we had the opportunity to provide a very unique form of  yoga  at BMSfit  in London Ontario Canada. it was the practice of Kundalini Yoga.

Kundalini practice

The teachings of this yoga were kept secret for thousands of years and was exclusively reserved for the royalty of ancient India due to it’s powerful ability to bring self awareness to those who practice it. Made available in 1968  by Yogi Bhajan to the western world  it provides the practitioner find inner peace, expand ones ability to focus, bring self awareness and overall feeling of inner strength of resolve.

“Kundalini Yoga  harnesses the mental, physical, and nervous energies of the body and put them under the domain of the will, which is the instrument of the soul. This technology precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, eye-focus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purifiy the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul.”

I had an opportunity just recently to do a Q and A session  with our instructor Jen Pinter (a.k.a. Kundalini Mama Facebook) on what it is that kundalini yoga provides and how it  is unique.

BMSfit What is Kundalini Yoga?
J.P. Kundalini Yoga is the Yoga of Awareness. It uses physical exercises to increase your strength and flexibility, then help you move beyond your limits. It uses breathing, relaxation, and meditations to help you tap into your inner reserve energy, clearing your mind and leaving you feeling empowered and peaceful.

BMSfit – How is Kundalini different from other yogas?

J.P.– Many types of yoga just work on one aspect at a time, Kundalini is like one stop shopping. In each class you address your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs. You always work at your own pace so that you don’t feel overwhelmed in any area.
BMSfit – Is Kundalini a good physical workout?

J.P. – Absolutely! The exercises are different every class. Some of exercises are quite dynamic, using lots of movement and endurance, others are static, using strength and postural alignment. All of the exercises work together to strengthen your immune system, glands, nervous system, circulation and digestive system.

BMSfit – Do I have to do the meditation?

J.P.– You don’t have to participate in any aspect of the class if you are uncomfortable. Kundalini is an art and a science, not a religion. The chanting or meditation uses the vibration of the sound currents to affect subtle changes in your mind and body. Whether you listen or join in wholeheartedly, it will leave you with a quiet, peaceful feeling which is a nice counterbalance to the strong physical exercises.

BMSfit – What is a typical class like?

J.P. – A typical adult class is 1.5 hours and includes a warm-up, a set of exercises or kriya, a relaxation and a meditation. Try to come to class with an empty stomach. Turn off any distractions such as your cell phone or pager. Bring a container of water. Wear comfortable, loose, natural clothes. Bring a yoga mat, sheepskin, light blanket and a pillow, if possible. During the class always listen to the limits that your body sets for you. Challenge yourself, but always be aware. Ask for help or clarification from your teacher, they will welcome the questions and so will your fellow students. After class try to pay attention to your physical, mental and emotional self, noting any changes or challenges. Most importantly, try to incorporate simple things that you learn in class, such as breathing techniques and posture into your everyday life!
